Marvel Universe of Super Heroes offers Carolinians an opportunity to experience a showcase that would feel at home in Hollywood. It’s pretty surreal to lay eyes on such important objects from the entertainment world, especially in Charlotte, a city with no direct connection to Marvel lore. The exhibition is a treat, start to finish. It’s an actual first edition of the iconic publisher’s debut comic book. It’s the actual screen-used costume Holland wore in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” That’s not a copy of what “Marvel Comics #1” looked like in 1939. That’s not a replica of Tom Holland’s Spidey suit. I helped people design their wood carvings at the event, but I also was able to meet WNBA players and women who held leadership positions in the NBA.Inside Marvel Universe of Super Heroes, visitors will find over 300 artifacts spanning 80 years of Marvel comics and movies. I participated in different STEM workshops and even had the opportunity to volunteer at a Female Quotient event when the NBA All Star week was in Charlotte, NC. As a STEM Intern, I was able to volunteer with the Girls in STEM program that introduced me to Discovery Place. I learned a lot and wanted to do more, so I became a STEM Intern.

I enjoyed teaching visitors how to use our equipment and helping with their designs. Because of my time with the Girls in STEM program, I wanted to do more at Discovery Place, so my freshmen year I applied to become a Thinker Space Apprentice. I learned how to use the design process to 3-D print, carve wood, sew, and create new things. I heard about an afterschool program called Girls in STEM that took students to Discovery Place to make different things and learn how to use different tools and equipment. I learned about Discovery Place when I was an 8th grader at Coulwood Middle School. "My name is Ky‘Aja Williams and I have been in Discovery Place programs for five years. They take part in educational experiences such as workshops and networking opportunities with professionals who are critical to helping the young people build the social capital that provides an important foundation for their careers."Ĭan you share a Discovery Place Digital Equity impact story? We are giving young people who grow up here access to the knowledge, skills and social capital to enter careers in the booming industries of our region. We are creating a pipeline for a homegrown workforce of future scientists, engineers, educators, and more. Current programs include Girls in STEM, Club Code, and STEM Pathways, among others. We are addressing the digital divide by encouraging young women and people of color to pursue careers in the sciences, technology and engineering. For more than 30 years, we have delivered youth development programs.
